Last month, Third Bridge Forum spoke to a former executive at JP Morgan Chase and Co to discuss Snowflake and Databricks, as well the opportunities in cloud computing for Google, Amazon and Microsoft. Here are the need-to-know insights from that Interview:

  • The specialist said hyperscalers “improving capabilities […] for their own platforms and products” is “absolutely” the number one threat to Snowflake and Databricks over the next 3-5 years. We were told to monitor the percentage of workloads, which they said could shift away from Snowflake and Databricks.
  • Large enterprises will be unlikely to standardise with just one vendor when choosing between Snowflake and Databricks, according to the specialist. We heard this is so large enterprises are not beholden to one vendor. They told us large customers would rather “divide and conquer”.

I think Snowflake is definitely under threat from companies like Starburst, Dremio, Ahana [and] DataLakeHouse.io.”

  • As Snowflake and Databricks continue to scale, hyperscale products are maturing and Google Cloud Platform is investing significantly into BigQuery, we were told. “BigQuery is becoming a very popular data warehousing, data lake tool. At least in healthcare,” the specialist added.
  • The specialist said competitive dynamics are heating up and Snowflake and Databricks could face heightened pressure over the next 3-5 years.
